The University of Tennessee, Knoxville's (UT) Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Program holds the distinction of being the inaugural doctoral program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) using a scientist-practitioner-advocate training framework. Our program maintains that excellence in research and clinical skills forms the foundation of counseling psychology, preparing students to become ethical professionals in both research and practice. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of equipping counseling psychologists with tools to actively address societal issues and empower their clients to create change at institutional, systemic, and policy levels (Mallinckrodt, Miles, & Levy, 2014). The APA recognized our innovative approach by honoring the UT Counseling Psychology Program with the Innovation in Graduate Education Award in 2012 for our pioneering training model.
