The UMass Labor Center's MS in Labor Studies merges in-depth examination of labor history with contemporary challenges through an intensive on-campus program. Students complete one year of full-time residence followed by a final semester dedicated to off-campus thesis work.
Our curriculum equips labor advocates with practical tools for organizing, corporate research, and negotiations, alongside theoretical frameworks to analyze modern workforce challenges. Students gain foundational knowledge in economics, politics, and law while examining intersections of race, migration, gender, and class in today's globalized economy.
A select number of teaching positions and internships are available to help offset tuition expenses and provide living stipends. Participants in these programs join the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO), among America's rare graduate student unions.
