The Master of Science in Geography at UMass Amherst is perfect for those passionate about human geography, environmental studies, and Geographic Information Science and Technologies (GIST). This program provides two flexible pathways:
The thesis option caters to students with specific research ambitions, concluding with an extensive research project and written thesis.
The non-thesis alternative focuses on broader geographical or interdisciplinary learning, ending with a capstone project and oral examination rather than a thesis.
Whichever path you select, you'll complete coursework in geographic theory, analytical methods, and technical skills like cartography, computational techniques, and remote sensing. You can also select advanced courses aligned with your career aspirations, including geocomputation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or independent research.
Our MS in Geography serves students specializing in human geography, environmental geography, or GIST. Typically completed in two years, the program combines graduate-level geography courses with either a thesis or non-thesis culminating experience. Students collaborate closely with faculty advisors to tailor their programs. Those without prior geography training may need preparatory coursework to build foundational knowledge. All incoming students must enroll in a graduate seminar on geographic theory and analysis.
