This two-year professional degree equips students in mathematical sciences for careers in modern industry or business. Participants gain comprehensive training in applied mathematics and scientific computing, explore mathematics-related topics in science and engineering, and participate in collaborative group projects. Graduates have successfully obtained positions with organizations of all sizes, from local businesses to multinational corporations.
The Applied Mathematics Master's Program specifically prepares graduates for thriving careers in today's industrial and business environments. The curriculum consists of three key elements:

a foundational set of graduate-level applied mathematics courses within the Mathematics and Statistics Department,
elective advanced courses from other disciplines,
a team-based applied scientific research project.
The department's graduate courses focus on Analytical Methods, Numerical Methods, and Probability/Statistics, providing students with deep expertise in advanced applied mathematics.

Recognizing the interdisciplinary nature of Applied Mathematics, students are advised to enroll in courses beyond their home department. These electives are tailored to individual interests and backgrounds, with recent selections including Computer Science, various Engineering disciplines, Physics, and Management Science. These external courses demonstrate real-world applications of mathematical techniques by professionals. External department courses require program director approval to qualify for the MS degree requirements.

Qualification Requirements

All applicants are expected to have a strong undergraduate preparation in mathematics, including (at least) advanced calculus and linear algebra. Other advanced courses such as real analysis, differential equations, and abstract algebra, are highly recommended. Please see each program's webpage for additional information specific to that program. A list of courses taken, with names of textbooks and instructors, would be a useful supplement to the application.

For the statistics option, an undergraduate degree in statistics is not required. Many of our successful statistics students have a degree in mathematics or another field such as engineering, computer science, biological sciences, together with substantial coursework in mathematics.
Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended
At least three letters of recommendation
A personal statement explaining the student's interest in pursuing graduate studies in mathematics or statistics
The following exam scores (all score reports should be sent by ETS using the code for UMass, which is 3917):
The GRE mathematics subject exam score is required for applicants to the Mathematics PhD program. It is not required for applicants to the PhD in Statistics.
The GRE general exam scores are strongly recommended, but not required.
UPDATE for Admission in Fall 2024: Because of the continuing impact of COVID-19 on ETS test administration, the GRE subject test will not be required in order to apply to the PhD program in Mathematics.
