The Graduate Certificate in African Diaspora Studies offered by the W. E. B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst provides students with an introduction to contemporary research on the African Diaspora, along with foundational understanding of historical, political, literary, and cultural responses of African communities to diasporic experiences. Students who complete this graduate certificate program will gain:

a solid foundation in the intricate political and historical evolution of Pan-Africanism and the African Diaspora across the Americas,

analytical frameworks and critical tools for examining diverse discourses about the African Diaspora,

practical understanding of key topics, themes, and ideas shaping current research in African Diaspora Studies, including critical analysis of refugee experiences, exile, migration patterns, immigration policies, transnational connections, and expatriation, and,

in-depth familiarity with scholarly work in at least one specialized area of African Diaspora Studies.

have gained admission into a graduate degree-granting department at UMass Amherst, and,

have earned a bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited university and have made an application for and gained admission to UMass as a non-degree student through the Graduate Admissions Office.
