The UMass Amherst chemistry department boasts a dynamic community of faculty and graduate students, specializing in both materials and biological chemistry alongside core disciplines like analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. This creates an excellent platform for pioneering research.
Materials Chemistry
Our department excels in synthesizing, fabricating, characterizing, and theorizing about innovative materials, particularly nanomaterials, for use in sensors, devices, catalysis, and biofunctional applications. We're recognized for pioneering synthetic methods in bottom-up assembly of organic, inorganic, and hybrid nanomaterials, as well as groundbreaking characterization techniques combining spectroscopy and theoretical approaches.
Biological Chemistry
We have gained recognition for employing biophysical and bioanalytical methods to reveal fundamental principles of protein structure, folding, and functionality. Our researchers utilize diverse techniques including spectroscopy, crystallography, calorimetry, and protein engineering to advance this field.
