The Music Education programs at UMass Amherst, available for both undergraduate and graduate students, boast a distinguished legacy of outstanding achievement. Our curriculum equips graduates to emerge as forward-thinking, reflective, and accomplished leaders in music education. The program features three degree options (BM, MM, PhD) along with a post-baccalaureate licensure pathway for aspiring music educators. At UMass Amherst, students gain modern, thorough, and hands-on training tailored for success in music education careers.
This program molds graduates into inventive and exceptionally prepared music teachers for PreK-12 settings. During their studies, learners enhance their teaching abilities through innovative coursework, supervised practical experiences, and interactions with diverse student groups—all while being part of a supportive network of classmates, professors, and practicing educators. The curriculum encompasses music education methodologies, instrumental/vocal instruction, conducting, music theory, private lessons, and teaching practicums across elementary and secondary levels.
Upon completion, students earn a Bachelor of Music (BM) with a music education focus and initial Massachusetts teaching certification. While interstate reciprocity agreements may facilitate license transfers, the UMass Amherst College of Education cannot ensure this program fulfills licensure requirements outside Massachusetts.
