The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) is a professional graduate program that trains students to become design practitioners in private firms, nonprofit organizations, and government institutions. Classified as a STEM program under Sustainability Studies (30.3301) by the National Center for Education Statistics, the MLA curriculum progresses from foundational landscape design principles in the initial year to sophisticated research and design projects in the final year. The three-year first professional track accommodates students holding undergraduate degrees in non-design disciplines, while the two-year post-professional option is tailored for those with landscape architecture or related design backgrounds. Accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB), this degree qualifies graduates to take the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE). Maryland's MLA program uniquely blends theoretical knowledge with practical application to tackle pressing concerns like stormwater control, climate adaptation, healing gardens, and equitable environmental access. Through core classes, specialized electives, and independent research, students develop robust theoretical frameworks, methodological skills, and awareness of current regional and worldwide challenges. The mandatory design studios and thesis/capstone projects, developed in collaboration with faculty and community stakeholders, contribute to the field's knowledge while serving public needs through research and engagement initiatives.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
