The Department of Art provides a graduate program culminating in a Master of Fine Arts degree, focusing on independent and cross-disciplinary artistic exploration. Fifteen practicing artist-educators comprise the Graduate Faculty, offering expertise across diverse mediums such as painting/drawing, sculpture/installation, printmaking, and digital/time-based media. This selective program typically awards fellowships and assistantships that involve teaching and studio supervision. Maryland's three-year MFA enables artists to immerse themselves in intensive studio work while building robust conceptual and historical frameworks for their practice. This 60-credit interdisciplinary curriculum centers fundamentally on studio production.
Enrolled students receive private studio space and utilize cutting-edge facilities for sculpture, digital media, and printmaking. During their three years, MFA candidates primarily engage in one-on-one mentorship with our resident faculty of working artists, who offer specialized knowledge across various media. Students collaborate closely with selected faculty members, fostering ongoing dialogues about artistic practice and receiving constructive feedback on developing works.
