The University of Hawai'i is a top-tier research university, with its Department of Art and Art History serving as a vibrant hub for diverse graduate programs. As Hawaii's sole provider of an MFA in visual arts, we also offer MA programs focusing on: (1) Chinese art, (2) Japanese art, (3) Pacific art, (4) South/Southeast Asian art, and (5) Modern/Contemporary art. Students are urged to enhance their coursework by taking relevant classes from other departments that align with their research interests. Our MFA program provides specialized tracks in ceramics, drawing/painting, electronic arts, glasswork, print media (encompassing digital imaging, photography, and printmaking), and expanded sculpture practices. Applicants must specify their chosen specialization and hold a BFA or equivalent degree, demonstrated by 75 undergraduate art credits - including 12 art history credits - along with substantial preparation in their intended studio focus. We recognize that some promising MFA candidates may come from unconventional backgrounds and will evaluate exceptional bachelor's degree holders who show artistic promise, dedication, and relevant experience. Those with non-traditional transcripts must submit GRE scores and course performance reports if more than 25% of their credits lack standard grading. Admission is exclusively for the Fall semester; no Spring enrollment is available.
The University of Hawai'i maintains its status as a premier research institution, with our Department of Art and Art History standing as Hawaii's only graduate center offering an MFA in visual arts.
