Art History examines visual arts across global cultures and historical eras. This field fosters critical, reflective viewpoints on diverse cultural expressions and societal structures throughout time. Courses analyze how visual arts and media shape our comprehension of topics like race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, environmental concerns, and political discourse within specific historical settings. The department provides both major and minor programs, equipping students with essential skills to analyze and interpret various art forms—from traditional sculpture and painting to contemporary video and performance art. Emphasizing writing proficiency, verbal communication, and personalized guidance, the program develops students' analytical thinking and clear expression in an increasingly visual world. Art History majors benefit from complementary humanities courses and advanced language study. Given its global focus, this major particularly suits students pursuing international study opportunities through the University's Education Abroad Program. Furthermore, Art History features an accelerated one-year Master's Program, allowing current UCI undergraduates to earn an M.A. by completing just one additional year after their bachelor's degree. This graduate program enhances students' expertise and expands their art historical knowledge.
