The Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) graduate program, part of the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, provides pathways to earn a Master of Education (M.Ed.). Our department features diverse programs tailored to help students achieve their academic and career objectives, whether in educational research, teaching, curriculum leadership, teacher training, or consulting across all educational levels - from elementary to higher education. Certain M.Ed. specializations prepare students for teacher certification, including options for those with non-education bachelor's degrees. We also provide M.Ed. concentrations for current educators and professionals, along with research-focused master's programs like the M.A. in Teaching & Learning, Policy & Leadership (TLPL).
This pathway culminates in both a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree and qualification for Maryland State Department of Education PreK-12 World Languages Certification, enabling graduates to teach Chinese, French, German, Latin, Italian, Russian, or Spanish in elementary or secondary schools. Our Reading Specialist program meets Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification standards for grades P-12 and holds approval from the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). Graduates earn their M.Ed. degree and, after three years of teaching experience, become eligible for MSDE reading specialist certification. The 30-credit curriculum includes a culminating summer reading clinic - the University of Maryland Summer Reading Program (SRP) - where candidates develop expertise in equitable literacy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
