The History and Library Science (HiLS) joint-degree program emerges from a collaboration between the College of Information Studies (Maryland's iSchool) and the History Department. Participants in HiLS earn both a Master of Arts in History and a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree. This interdisciplinary program is perfect for those seeking to combine scholarly research approaches with practical, real-world applications. The College Park location offers exceptional access to numerous prestigious research collections, enabling students to complement their academic learning with valuable internship opportunities. Through this dual-degree curriculum, HiLS students develop expertise in historical research methods alongside modern information science techniques, equipping them for professional roles across libraries, archives, museums, and various information organizations in public, private, and non-profit settings.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
