The Student Affairs Concentration focuses on training future professionals for roles in higher education settings. Guided by fundamental principles including student growth, diversity and equity, leadership development, academic inquiry, and ethical standards, this program fosters close ties with the University of Maryland, College Park's Division of Student Affairs, known for its tradition of nurturing scholar-practitioners. Master's degree holders typically find employment in areas like student engagement hubs, academic guidance departments, career counseling services, residence life offices, orientation programs, leadership initiatives, and cultural centers. Those earning doctoral degrees frequently pursue careers as faculty members or high-level administrators overseeing academic advising, student programming, campus life departments, diversity centers, institutional research, academic support services, and career development offices. The program's proximity to Washington DC offers students access to numerous higher education institutions, policy groups, and professional associations in the region.
Student Affairs represents one specialization option within The Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education (HESI) graduate program. Alongside Student Affairs, HESI provides concentrations in Higher Education and International Education Policy. Applicants should select and apply to only one specialization. Prospective students are encouraged to thoroughly research each concentration to identify the best match for their professional goals and personal ambitions.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
