The Children and Youth in Communities specialization explores fostering positive development for young people in community environments, examining how social and cultural institutions—including schools—influence growth trajectories. It investigates how children and youth construct their identities through educational, social, communal, sexual, and political experiences. This program adopts an ecological perspective that highlights strengths, viewing individual learning and development as interconnected with community progress and cultural change.

This interdisciplinary option combines expertise from the College of Liberal Arts and College of Health and Human Services. Students gain holistic academic and practical knowledge about the diverse experiences of children and youth across social, cultural, psychological, physical, emotional, and educational dimensions in various local, national, and international settings.
