Graduate students who complete the Curriculum & Instruction: English Education program emerge as highly skilled professionals ready to tackle modern teaching challenges. Whether pursuing a doctorate, specialist degree, or master's in English Education, you'll develop the skills to thrive in educational settings and other professional environments. Throughout your advanced studies, you'll engage in hands-on experiences with both students and educators. This includes working in nearby schools, providing one-on-one tutoring for struggling learners, conducting small group instruction, and designing and delivering lesson plans. Through these practical experiences in curriculum development and classroom management, you'll develop a deep appreciation for contemporary literacy forms across various media. You'll examine how digital tools can improve educational outcomes and investigate the responsibilities of English educators when teaching multilingual students. The program also focuses on the critical function of English teachers in fostering reading skills.
Admission to the program is determined by a departmental committee and normally requires: 1) a master's degree in English, or its equivalent, from an accredited college or university, with a GPA of at least 3.5; 2) Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores; verbal scores in the 86th percentile range are typical among successful candidates; 3) three or more letters of recommendation assessing the applicants potential to do doctoral work in English; and 4) a writing sample.
