The Department of Special Education (EDSP) provides a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program aimed at equipping students to perform research, share findings, and train future special education instructors. Recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a top-tier program for educator development, EDSP's PhD curriculum readies graduates for academic roles at research institutions or leadership positions within educational systems, policy groups, or federal agencies. This program focuses on: Developing expert researchers and scholars in special education Training skilled teacher educators who can prepare future special education professionals Cultivating leaders, advocates, and policy makers who will positively influence the education and well-being of individuals with disabilities and their families.
Admission to the Ph.D. program requires:
Master’s degree or equivalent in Special Education or a related field from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.5 or better;
An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better;
A score on the Graduate Record Exam placing the student at or above the 50th percentile on verbal, quantitative, and analytic subtests;
Two years of research or work experience with exceptional populations;
A TOEFL score of 100 is required for international students who are not native speakers of English.
