The Special Education Ph.D. program is a collaborative initiative between SF State's Graduate College of Education and UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Education. A joint doctoral committee, led by faculty co-directors from both institutions and advised by an Executive Committee comprising professors from both campuses, oversees the program. Students must satisfy the academic standards set by both universities' Graduate Studies Divisions.
SF State's faculty contributors primarily come from the Special Education Department, covering diverse disability-related disciplines. Doctoral candidates may also collaborate with professors from various departments including communicative disorders, psychology, sociology, social work, ethnic studies, and English. UC Berkeley's faculty participants are mainly drawn from the Graduate School of Education, representing key academic divisions: education, language and literacy studies, cognitive development, policy analysis, organizational studies, measurement and evaluation, and sociocultural research. The program also involves faculty from related fields like psychology, linguistics, public health, optometry, anthropology, public policy, social welfare, and behavioral sciences. Each doctoral student receives guidance from a primary advisor at both institutions.
