The Cognitive and Neural Systems (CNS) Program unites scientists exploring the interconnected realms of mind, brain, and behavior. CNS research teams examine the biological and cognitive foundations of various functions including attention, sensory processing, movement control, learning, choice-making, sensorimotor coordination, and social interactions across human and animal subjects. Experimental approaches in CNS labs encompass brain imaging techniques, electrical signal recording, drug-based neural interventions, tissue studies, computer simulations, gaze measurement, and observational behavior studies. CNS research yields insights into the brain mechanisms governing everyday actions while advancing knowledge relevant to neurological conditions, psychological well-being, and learning approaches. The program collaborates with the university-wide Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences Program (NACS), which integrates research across systems neuroscience, cognitive science, molecular/cellular neuroscience, and computational approaches (www.nacs.umd.edu). Additionally, the CNS Program benefits from partnerships with the Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a federally funded research institution specializing in language acquisition and application studies.
