The Doctor of Philosophy in Information Studies (PhD) program equips students to tackle the most challenging social and technological issues facing society today and in the future. Collaborating closely with distinguished faculty at globally recognized research centers, students investigate critical information challenges that frequently blend social and technical advancements. Grounded in the fundamental principles of information studies - equity, diversity, and accessibility - we employ these values to drive innovative discoveries. Doctoral candidates develop expertise in research methods, interdisciplinary theory, comprehensive literature review skills, synthesis and application of knowledge, and the creation and dissemination of original scholarship. Featuring a diverse faculty specializing in various information science domains including virtual communities, data systems, information governance, user experience design, and digital preservation, the UMD INFO College welcomes doctoral candidates from varied academic and professional backgrounds. Contemporary society's most complex challenges all revolve around information. We invite prospective PhD students who are driven by unresolved questions about information-related issues.
