The Department of Environmental Science and Technology (ENST) provides advanced degree programs culminating in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy qualifications. ENST scholars can specialize in one of four focus areas: Soil and Watershed Sciences, Ecological Technology Design, Wetland Science, or Ecosystem Health and Natural Resource Management. The Soil and Watershed Sciences concentration equips graduates to tackle complex environmental challenges related to soil resources across various scales, from individual fields to entire watersheds. As Earth's most intricate and ecologically vital biogeochemical systems, soils play a fundamental role in all terrestrial environments - ranging from grasslands and Arctic tundra to urban landscapes, forest ecosystems, and bioenergy plantations. Soil Science forms the core of Critical Zone research, which examines the dynamic interface where Earth's atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere interact near the planet's surface, as identified by the National Science Foundation.
