The Anthropology of Heritage examines how we preserve and manage cultural heritage, exploring both tangible and intangible aspects to comprehend connections between history and modern times. In our Anthropology Department, archaeology plays a key role, with a particular focus on historical archaeology that investigates how societies interpret, utilize, and engage with their past. Research areas include class dynamics in Annapolis, labor conflicts in Pennsylvania's coal region, ecological changes from European settlement in Iceland, cultural adaptation in Ireland, migration impacts in the U.S., Indigenous ecological persistence amid colonization in the American Southwest and Southeast, and heritage's role in advancing social equity.
