The Doctor of Medicine/Master of Science (M.D./M.S.) dual degree program is a collaborative initiative between the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Prospective students must first gain admission to the M.D. program at the School of Medicine and express their intent to pursue the combined degree during the application process. The curriculum structure follows this sequence: two years of medical studies, one year of graduate research, followed by two final years of medical training. This program aims to expand physicians' expertise in bioengineering research and innovation. It's particularly suited for individuals pursuing careers in clinical investigation, biomaterials science, medical imaging technologies, healthcare device creation, and pharmaceutical research. Upon completion, participants earn both a medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and an engineering master's degree from the Clark School.
Admission to the Graduate Program in Bioengineering requires a Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited undergraduate institution. Applicants with degrees in non-engineering disciplines, such as biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics, are expected to have the following prerequisite courses: Calculus I, II, III; Differential Equations; and Thermodynamics. These courses would ideally have been completed by the time of application, but they may also be in progress.
