This certificate program is perfect for students looking to combine African American Studies with their chosen major from other departments or schools. Those who frequently take AASP courses to meet General Education requirements, electives, or supplementary sequences in other fields may find the certificate particularly appealing. The AASP certificate consists of three components: foundational courses, upper-level AASP electives, and an AASP seminar. Students must complete all requirements using standard grading and achieve at least a C- in each course. The University of Maryland's Department of African-American Studies provides an exceptional interdisciplinary curriculum exploring the Black experience across the United States, Africa, and the African Diaspora. Our distinguished faculty, recognized nationally and internationally, research diverse topics including gender and labor, social disparities and health, education policy gaps, criminal justice issues, and family health dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa. Rooted in both social sciences and humanities, our program offers distinctive perspectives on historical and modern challenges affecting African-descended populations while informing impactful social policy development.
