Spanish stands as one of the globe's foremost languages for business and international relations, boasting a wealth of literary and cultural heritage. Those earning a Bachelor's degree in Spanish unlock diverse career paths across numerous sectors, particularly in internationally oriented fields. Options range from advanced studies in literature, linguistics, and cultural studies to professions in education, government, corporate sectors, legal fields, environmental advocacy, healthcare, social work, and creative industries. The Spanish major requires 36 credits beyond prerequisite courses, plus 9 supplementary credits. Students select from three specialized tracks: 1) Spanish and Latin American Literature, Culture, and Media, 2) Spanish Linguistics, Culture, and Education, or 3) Spanish Language, Culture, and Professional Applications.
Spanish majors are strongly advised to pursue study abroad programs in Spanish-speaking regions. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides exceptional international study options for both majors and minors. Specialized courses cater to heritage learners—students raised in Spanish-speaking households or with significant informal exposure to the language. These classes support learners at various proficiency levels, from basic comprehension to advanced fluency, emphasizing reading, writing, speaking, listening, and cultural literacy. The curriculum explores Hispanic cultures, linguistic diversity, traditions, geography, history, contemporary issues, and the unique identity of U.S. heritage speakers. Additionally, the department provides a minor in Heritage Language and Latina Culture studies.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
