The University of Maryland's African-American Studies program delivers an exceptional interdisciplinary curriculum examining Black experiences across the United States, Africa, and the global African Diaspora. Our distinguished faculty, recognized nationally and internationally, pursue groundbreaking research in areas including gender and labor studies, health disparities, education policy, criminal justice systems, and family health in African communities. Rooted in both social sciences and humanities, our program provides distinctive perspectives for analyzing historical and modern challenges affecting African-descended populations while informing impactful policy solutions. Students can choose between two undergraduate tracks: a comprehensive AASP program without specialization that covers diverse subjects like cultural studies, social activism, public health, youth development, identity politics, diaspora studies, and institutional racism.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
