Pursuing a Native American Studies degree at USD provides an in-depth exploration of American Indian nations' histories, languages, cultures, arts, sovereignty, and modern circumstances. You'll engage in both academic and community-based learning experiences, along with research projects outside traditional coursework, to build strong communication and research abilities. These skills will prove invaluable for fostering meaningful cross-cultural connections throughout your professional and personal life.
USD's Native American Studies program offers distinctive preparation for students aiming to work with tribal communities while synergizing with fields like anthropology, art history, English, health sciences, history, Lakota language, and psychology. The program establishes a strong base for diverse career paths in public service, non-profits, tribal governance, business, media, education, healthcare, and social services. It also creates excellent groundwork for advanced studies in law, education, public policy, and other graduate programs.
Beyond the core Native American Studies curriculum, students may choose to focus on Lakota studies. This concentration deepens understanding of Lakota history, cultural traditions, and governance systems while incorporating upper-level Lakota language coursework.
