The Native American Studies program has three primary objectives. First, it aims to support students in achieving the broader goals of an undergraduate degree at Cal Poly Humboldt, fostering a thoughtful and analytical approach to understanding human experiences. The curriculum cultivates critical thinking and cultural awareness by exploring Native American viewpoints and philosophies. Many classes are taught from Indigenous perspectives, using interdisciplinary methods that allow students to: (1) learn key concepts and techniques from social sciences, (2) evaluate the advantages and limitations of these academic disciplines, and (3) develop appreciation for cultural traditions distinct from mainstream U.S. society, thereby gaining new perspectives on dominant cultural norms.
A second objective is to offer Native American students the chance to explore their own cultural background while developing scholarly tools to examine their heritage and personal experiences.
The third objective prepares students for professional paths involving Native communities by building essential knowledge, analytical abilities, cultural understanding, and awareness. Potential career paths include federal Indian law, tribal governance, Indigenous education, cultural and environmental resource management, and community services.
