The UMBC Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is a graduate-level educator preparation program accredited by both the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Designed for career changers and recent bachelor's degree holders pursuing teaching certification, the program covers foundational teaching methodologies such as curriculum development, instructional strategies, evaluation techniques, and child development, along with specialized subject-area methods courses. Aligned with Maryland's 1996 Teacher Education Redesign initiative, the MAT program features competency-focused coursework and mandates a Professional Development School internship for all participants. The curriculum blends content knowledge with teaching practices, following recommendations from leading educational organizations including the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (1996), the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and CAEP. Candidates demonstrate their teaching proficiency through performance-based evaluations, and upon completion, graduates fulfill all Maryland certification standards, earning initial teaching credentials in their chosen specialization while deepening their expertise in educational theory and practice.
