UMBC's Music Department offers personalized guidance to help undergraduate students thrive as emerging artists at a compact research university. Our accomplished alumni pursue careers as performers, music teachers, audio technology specialists, business owners, and academics across the nation. Those majoring in instrumental performance gain comprehensive training in solo, ensemble, and orchestral repertoire, equipping them for advanced studies or professional careers while emphasizing business development skills. Faculty expertise spans diverse areas including ensemble performance, American musical traditions, modern Japanese compositions, works by underrepresented creators, avant-garde techniques, historical string performance practices, and spontaneous music creation. Unique performance experiences are available through our partnership with Italy's Nicolini Conservatory and joint initiatives with faculty and global graduate students in our American Contemporary Music certificate program.
