The Geography & Environmental Systems department provides M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs, along with an accelerated B.S./M.S. track, an undergraduate GIScience Certificate, and a Professional Masters in GIScience designed for working professionals at the Shady Grove campus near Washington D.C. Ph.D. candidates receive a minimum of two years of financial support, with most receiving continued assistance through research grants, teaching positions, fellowships, or agency work. While M.S. students aren't guaranteed funding, many secure support via faculty research projects, public agencies, teaching assistantships, or campus programs like the Shriver Center Peaceworkers initiative for returning Peace Corps volunteers.
