Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine providing both Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct cutting-edge research across diverse chemistry disciplines. With intentionally small research groups, we foster close mentorship between students and professors. Numerous research initiatives bridge multiple disciplines, creating collaborative opportunities with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most of our graduate students pursue Ph.D. degrees, with all first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress throughout their degree programs.
Environmental Chemistry
Environmental chemists investigate the origins, impacts, and transformations of chemical compounds in air, water, and soil systems. This field emphasizes quantitative approaches for tracking chemical pathways in natural environments. Practitioners integrate principles from chemistry and environmental sciences to analyze chemical behavior in ecosystems. Fundamental chemical concepts applied include reaction mechanisms, solution chemistry, measurement units, sampling methods, and analytical procedures.
