Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine offering both Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct cutting-edge research across diverse chemistry disciplines. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams pursue interdisciplinary projects, creating opportunities to work alongside engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.

Most of our graduate students pursue Ph.D. degrees, with all first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally starting in the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress throughout their degree programs.
Analytical Chemistry
Analytical chemists specialize in identifying chemical compositions and studying molecular interactions. Their expertise plays a crucial role in environmental chemistry, particularly in detecting and analyzing chemical pollutants in ecosystems.
