Students looking for an academic setting that both supports and pushes them to expand their knowledge, discover fresh perspectives, and develop skills in literary analysis, research, writing, and instruction will thrive in our program. Our key advantage lies in the variety of methodologies and learning opportunities we provide. MA students can anticipate evolving in diverse and often surprising ways as they engage with multiple dimensions of English studies. While broadening their literary understanding, our graduate students may create technical manuals, refine short stories, design creative assignment sequences or funding proposals, and tackle areas like poetic theory, empirical writing research, and literary/rhetorical analysis.
The Master of Arts in English typically requires 31 credits (comprising ten seminars plus a one-credit graduate orientation). This program may include six thesis credits and follows a curriculum designed to achieve specific learning objectives. Those without an English undergraduate degree might need to complete 39 credits. With proper authorization from the graduate coordinator (or thesis advisor) and department chair, students may transfer external graduate courses, enroll in cross-departmental offerings, or (in special cases) arrange 400-level seminar experiences for graduate credit.
