The Graduate School of Biomedical Science & Engineering (GSBSE) provides a PhD program in Biomedical Engineering. GSBSE fosters education and innovation at the intersection of biological, physical, clinical, and behavioral sciences, developing future faculty members, educating scientists and engineers, and strengthening Maine's biotech and biomedical sector. Enrolled GSBSE students can select their thesis advisor from more than 150 faculty members across multiple prestigious research and academic institutions. Course materials and faculty interaction are delivered through advanced videoconferencing technology. First-year PhD candidates complete four foundational modules (BMS 625), followed by personalized study plans tailored to their research focus. Alongside core classes, first-year students participate in at least three lab rotations with faculty from two or more of the five collaborating institutions, with an optional fourth rotation available. Students finalize their dissertation advisor and research topic during or after completing these rotations.
