The department's goal is to strengthen biomedical engineering education and research at Wayne State University, empowering our graduates to address societal challenges posed by disease, injury, and aging.
Wayne State University proudly hosts one of the world's oldest continuously operating biomedical engineering research initiatives. For over seven decades, the collaboration between the School of Medicine and College of Engineering has flourished. Researchers from both institutions have made groundbreaking contributions that continue to improve global health outcomes.
Biomedical engineering studies at Wayne State have developed over half a century. Originally, students could specialize in biomechanics through engineering mechanics and mechanical engineering programs. Leveraging this rich heritage and expanding expertise in biomaterials and biomedical sensors, dedicated graduate programs launched in 1998. By 2010, a comprehensive suite of biomedical engineering degrees became available to support our exceptional student body.
