The Modern Languages and Classics Department faculty are dedicated to outstanding teaching, research, and community engagement, aligning with the University of Maine's Land and Sea Grant objectives. Our primary focus is delivering exceptional education to the College, University, and Maine residents, while continuously enhancing our professional expertise and curriculum offerings. We actively support local communities and language educators throughout Maine. As committed scholars, we engage in research that advances teaching methodologies, explores language-related cultural aspects, and generates new disciplinary insights. As the University's premier resource for diversity education and global communication, we facilitate worldwide language acquisition and cultural understanding. Our department provides graduate studies in French and Spanish, along with undergraduate degrees in French, Spanish, Romance Languages, and International Affairs. Students can pursue minors in French, Spanish, Professional Languages, and Classical Studies, with intermediate-level courses available in various languages including Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian. We also offer instruction in German, Hebrew, and Latin. Beyond educating most of Maine's language instructors and supporting their professional growth, our department serves as a crucial resource for University of Maine students pursuing diverse degrees to achieve global success.

To earn a Spanish, French, or German certificate, students must complete at least nine credits in the chosen language, with a minimum of three credits at advanced levels (300-level or higher).
