Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) students benefit from exceptional professional growth opportunities in a prime location. Nearby attractions like the Appalachian Trail, lakes, hiking paths, and the Atlantic Ocean offer numerous outdoor settings for hands-on learning and research. UMaine's KPE faculty are recognized leaders in fitness, obesity, and sports performance. KPE students collaborate within the College of Education and Human Development while accessing the extensive resources of Maine's flagship university. Additionally, they can enroll in the Honors College for rigorous small-class experiences and undergraduate research opportunities, or pursue an Innovation Engineering minor to develop and implement creative ideas in their discipline.
The KPE program blends academic coursework with practical experience through labs, internships, and teaching placements. Students select from three specialization areas: exercise science, outdoor leadership, or teaching/coaching. Exercise science offers multiple pathways, including a lab science track for graduate studies in health fields. The outdoor leadership concentration mandates at least four national certifications, including Wilderness First Responder, alongside an outdoor leadership minor. Teaching/coaching students can earn K-12 physical education and health teaching certification.
