The Department of Civil Engineering stands as one of the University of Maine's longest-established departments, graduating its first class in 1872.
Civil engineers play a key role in designing, planning, and building infrastructure that benefits communities. Their work encompasses a wide range of projects, including roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, pipelines, airports, ports, hydroelectric dams, power stations, irrigation systems, flood control measures, building foundations and frames, water treatment facilities, pollution management systems, and environmental conservation initiatives.
At the University of Maine, civil engineering students can focus on one or multiple specialty areas and further refine their expertise in roles such as design or project management. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes core principles applicable across civil engineering disciplines. This educational approach ensures students receive a solid foundation in civil engineering while enabling them to choose electives in fields like environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, water resources, construction, or coastal engineering. Additionally, coursework in humanities and social sciences provides students with a broader understanding of cultural, political, and economic factors and their connection to engineering practice.
