Civil engineers utilize concepts of motion and materials to design, construct, and maintain public and private infrastructure, operating within economic, social, and environmental limitations. Their work encompasses transportation networks, bridges, buildings, water supply systems, pollution control, waste management, irrigation, drainage, river and harbor enhancements, dams, and reservoirs. This field also involves planning and conducting surveys to map and define physical and cultural features on the earth's surface. Additional roles include research, testing, sales, management, and related tasks. Classroom learning is enhanced by site visits, allowing direct observation of operational engineering systems and ongoing construction projects.
Environmental engineering, a specialization within civil engineering, focuses on safeguarding public and environmental health by ensuring safe water supplies, managing solid and hazardous waste, treating domestic and industrial wastewater, facilitating resource recovery, providing urban and rural drainage for sanitation, and controlling water, soil, and air pollution. The environmental track modifies the general civil engineering curriculum by substituting certain courses and electives with advanced studies in chemistry, biology, microbiology, and specialized environmental engineering and design topics.
