The Department of Civil Engineering (CEE) provides an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, along with a five-year combined Bachelor's and Master's degree program. Civil engineering majors can also choose the environmental degree option available through the department. For those interested in environmental engineering without committing to a major, the university provides a sustainability minor.
Civil and environmental engineering cover the engineering disciplines most directly involved with managing and enhancing the human environment and quality of life. Graduates in these fields often pursue careers focused on building societal infrastructure, as well as preserving and restoring the natural environment.
GW's civil engineering curriculum covers the core principles of environmental, geotechnical, structural, water resources, and transportation engineering. You'll apply your learning through engaging projects—like rehabilitating a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, enhancing earthquake resilience for bridges and roads, and improving child safety in car seats. As a GW engineering student, you can participate in various activities and organizations, including the steel bridge competition, the American Society of Engineers, and Engineers Without Borders. You'll also have opportunities to tailor your academic path to align with specific career goals by honing analytical, experimental, and design skills essential for engineering or related fields such as business, law, and public policy. Our graduates are equipped to design, plan, and construct infrastructure like buildings, bridges, roads, airports, and transit systems, or to specialize in areas like pollution control, hazardous waste remediation, or water and wastewater treatment systems.
Students should apply to the George Washington University (GW) as a first-year applicant if you are currently in your senior year of high school, have earned a GED or completed high school.
