The University of La Verne's ABA-approved Legal Studies program equips students for paralegal roles and other positions requiring legal knowledge, analytical abilities, and organizational expertise. Paralegals (also called legal assistants) operate under attorney supervision while handling tasks that remain the attorney's ultimate responsibility. Note: This program doesn't qualify graduates to practice law or serve the public directly unless authorized by law.
As one of America's most rapidly expanding professions, paralegal work offers dynamic opportunities for those seeking an engaging, forward-looking career. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections, paralegal employment is expected to increase approximately 28% between 2008-2018. These professionals collaborate with lawyers while handling substantial portions of legal work in law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies.
Paralegals undertake diverse responsibilities such as: case management and development, legal research, client interviews, fact gathering, document preparation and analysis, technical data compilation for independent decision-making, and (where permitted) representing clients before administrative agencies.
Pursuing paralegal education suits both legal enthusiasts and career changers. Many law school applicants discover their paralegal background provides valuable preparation for legal studies.
A Legal Studies degree opens multiple career paths while serving as strong preparation for law school. Required internships provide hands-on experience, and all graduates receive a California-compliant Paralegal Certificate. Career transitioners will find their acquired skills transferable to various legal and business environments.
La Verne graduates immediately apply their education in daily practice. The program teaches substantive law and practical skills while fostering analytical thinking and building an ethical, service-focused professional foundation that values diversity and lifelong learning. Our Legal Studies Program aims to prepare graduates for immediate success as working paralegals.
