The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders aims to benefit Kentucky residents and others by equipping graduates with essential expertise for delivering excellent clinical care and taking on leadership positions. We support our community and field through research-backed clinical services, professional development programs, and knowledge sharing among communication disorder specialists. Additionally, we advance, perform, and facilitate studies that enhance comprehension and treatment approaches for individuals with communication challenges.

Our Master of Science program in Communication Sciences and Disorders provides foundational training for aspiring speech-language pathologists. The six-semester program combines academic instruction with hands-on clinical practice, ensuring graduates fulfill both state licensing and national certification standards.

Qualification Requirements

Prospective graduate students need to recognize that admission to our graduate program is very selective. We only accept a limited number of students each year. While the minimum admission requirement is a 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0, the average GPA of students selected for our program is 3.8. We have no set criteria for GREs of students that we accept, but the successful applicant must have GRE scores consistent with University of Kentucky standards. Our admission decisions are based on a composite of information about the applicant, not merely one factor. The composite includes but is not limited to: GREs, grades, personal achievements/involvement during school or since graduation, awareness about the disciplines in CSD, service activities, potential to contribute to the cultural diversity of our program, letters of recommendation. A strong personal statement reflects your experiences and what unique attributes you would bring to our program.
International applicants whose native language is not English must submit either a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. The University of Kentucky requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based). For IELTS, a minimum mean band score of 6.5 is required. Students seeking admission to the Graduate School must have obtained a baccalaureate degree, prior to the start of the term for which s/he is admitted, from a fully accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or from a recognized foreign institution.
