Textiles are woven into our daily existence through clothing, furnishings, decoration, and artistic expression. This versatile medium bridges ancient traditions with modern innovation, combining technical skill with creative vision. Within Fiber studies, every method, material, and approach carries its own distinctive narrative. At SA/VS, we embrace a cross-disciplinary sculptural approach incorporating weaving, knitting, felting, sewing, embroidery, and dyeing techniques, where students manually construct textile layers while discovering countless ways to manipulate fibers. Contemporary fiber art merges time-honored craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Our curriculum is shaped by fundamental themes that both motivate and direct classroom learning. By studying fiber's rich heritage, students gain historical context to enhance their creative work and spark new ideas.
From day one, students engage in hands-on practice, mastering fundamental skills like looping, knotting, and fabric dyeing. They investigate diverse materials, discovering each textile's unique properties while testing the limits of their structural possibilities. Using both traditional looms and modern sewing equipment, students produce technically sophisticated, conceptually engaging artworks suitable for professional gallery displays.
