The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Art Education is a multidisciplinary program equipping students with the expertise and practical training needed to pursue careers as certified preK-12 art instructors in public or private schools, or as qualified educators in community environments. Students engage in a comprehensive curriculum blending visual arts, general education, and specialized art education courses. The program concludes with either a community-based internship or a full-semester student teaching placement, offering essential hands-on experience in art instruction. This program harmonizes creative development with professional training for future arts educators.
During their initial three semesters, art education students fulfill foundational visual arts requirements. Upon completion, Visual Art Education majors must apply for the VAE Professional Sequence in their sophomore year, while transfer students with more than 45 credit hours must apply during their first KU semester. Admission requirements include: (1) Successful completion of all prerequisite courses with a minimum 2.75 GPA and no grade below C in prerequisites. (2) Maintenance of an overall 2.75 cumulative GPA.
