For more than seven decades, the Department has offered a chemistry PhD program, currently comprising over 25 faculty researchers, around 130 graduate students, and more than 20 postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, and visiting scholars. Our alumni and postdocs have secured positions at prestigious universities, corporate research centers, government labs, and alternative career paths for PhD holders. Students will:
develop expertise in advanced chemical concepts and methods beyond undergraduate-level knowledge,
formulate innovative chemical research questions and hypotheses,
conduct independent investigations by designing and performing experiments,
analyze their own findings and those of peers with critical thinking,
recognize ethical challenges in research and implement appropriate solutions,
establish lab safety protocols, evaluate potential hazards in novel chemistry research, and create risk management plans, and
effectively present chemical knowledge, theoretical models, and research outcomes through both spoken and written communication for diverse audiences.
