The Chemistry Department provides both M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. The Ph.D. is awarded based on demonstrating comprehensive understanding of contemporary chemistry principles and the capacity to conduct autonomous research, evidenced by a satisfactory doctoral dissertation. For the M.S., students can choose between submitting a qualifying Master's thesis (Plan I) or completing designated graduate coursework along with a comprehensive oral exam (Plan II). Note that a Master's degree is not required for Ph.D. program admission.
At UCI, Analytical Chemistry focuses on three interconnected research domains aligned with faculty specializations: Environmental and atmospheric studies (Blake, Finlayson-Pitts, Hemminger, Nizkorodov), Materials characterization (Hemminger, Penner, Corn, Law, Ardo), and Biological analysis (Corn, Penner, Weiss, Martin, Ge). This research heavily utilizes advanced instrumentation and cross-disciplinary approaches, incorporating innovative techniques such as microfabrication, nanoscale electrodeposition, surface enzyme chemistry, and single particle/cell analysis methodologies.
