The program builds a solid liberal arts foundation while emphasizing critical visual analysis, textual interpretation, scholarly writing, and research methodologies. Iowa pioneered combining Studio Art and Art History within a single institution, a model maintained today through the School of Art, Art History, and Design. This dual approach reflects the belief that artists gain from studying historical traditions, historians benefit from hands-on artistic practice, and educators require expertise in both areas. The university additionally provides a BA in Art and originated the artist-as-teacher model. As an Art or Art History student, you'll learn from globally recognized faculty whose creative works and publications are showcased in international collections.
