Art has played a vital role in human civilization across the ages. In modern times, artistic expression shapes nearly every facet of contemporary life, influencing everything from fashion trends and food aesthetics to marketing campaigns, urban design, recreational activities, and beyond. Creators continuously produce art in diverse forms, while scholars analyze, contextualize, and preserve these works and their lasting cultural impact. The University of Iowa stood among the first American institutions to integrate Studio Art and Art History within a single academic unit. Today, the School of Art, Art History, and Design maintains this dual focus, upholding its belief that practitioners gain from understanding artistic heritage, researchers benefit from hands-on creative experience, and educators require expertise in both disciplines.
Iowa also led the way in establishing the artist-educator model. As an Art or Art History student, you'll collaborate with renowned faculty whose artworks and scholarly works are celebrated in global collections and publications.
