Earning a social studies education degree from UIndy equips you with essential skills for teaching history while deepening your understanding of government, geography, economics, sociology, and psychology.
Our department collaborates closely with Teacher Education to prepare future secondary social studies educators. The program merges a history bachelor's degree with specialized coursework in government and geography, creating strong foundations for social studies licensure. Notably, every UIndy graduate taking the certification exam since our curriculum redesign has successfully earned their teaching credentials.
Middle and high school teaching certification requires completion of the history bachelor's requirements, four government and geography courses each, two additional social studies electives, plus education coursework. For academic guidance, you'll work with dual advisors - one from History & Political Science and another from Teacher Education.
